“Rokkon Tokubetsu Junmai,” produced by Matsumidori Brewery Co., Ltd. in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, has been awarded the “Aomori Junmai Trophy” at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) 2026 SAKE Competition, one of the world’s most prestigious alcoholic beverage competitions.
The “Aomori Junmai Trophy” is the highest honor granted within the Junmai category for Aomori Prefecture. Furthermore, this sake was recognized as a runner-up for the overall Trophy awards, placing among only 60 outstanding entries selected from 1,738 submissions.
“Rokkon Tokubetsu Junmai” was crafted to highlight the character of Aomori-grown rice while achieving harmony between aroma, umami, and finish.
During judging, it received the following tasting comment:
“Rich and ripe nose with notes of pineapple, banana and Muscat grape. The palate has excellent balance of fruitiness and umami.”
The judges highly praised its elegant fruit-forward aroma and the beautiful balance between fruitiness and umami.
Over the past year, our brewing team and toji (master brewer) repeatedly discussed and refined the sake’s profile through extensive trial and error.
We are truly honored that the accumulated efforts rooted in Aomori’s climate, rice, and sake-brewing tradition have been recognized on the world stage.
Through “Rokkon,” we will continue sharing the appeal of Japanese sake and the value of Aomori with audiences both in Japan and around the world.
